Frequently Asked Questions
We are not in this to make a lot of money, but rather prefer to simply get this library out there to as many people as we can.
Look at it this way..
When I (Fred’s son) am one day gone, I want there to be as many copies of his Legacy out there as possible. Because the more there are, the greater the chances that this will not be lost to history.
There’s just nothing like this out there anymore. I want SwingThing to continue to have a long and ubiquitous life – and it’s most likely to happen that way if enough of you have a copy – particularly of you share it with Friends & Family.
The price we charge covers the price of the USB Flash drive (we ship it on), as well as the time it takes me to prepare and ship your order.
I’m living off my social security – so what little profit I do make here, goes to keeping this going.
It’s the way the shows are organized.
The shows themselves are otherwise identical.
They both work identically in terms of adding them to, and using them within iTunes
- The Folder structure for The SwingThing Library for iTunes
is organized by Guest and Theme.
- The folder structure for The SwingThing Library for Broadcasters
is organized by Show Number.
For Broadcasters – it’s assumed you will use our searchNplay search tool (included) so you can generate a “pull list” that your board-operator can use to pull shows for adding to your automation system. Which is easiest when the shows are organized by Show Number.
Casual Users – will typically just use the Search Field in iTunes.
Truth be told.. both work identically if added to iTunes – the only real difference is in how the shows are organized into folders and their associated sub-folders..
- We originally wanted to set everything up for iTunes, and so leveraged iTune’s organizational method – which organizes everything by “Artist Name” in one folder and then all that artist’s albums in sub-folders. Hence the SwingThing Library for iTunes was created first.
- Later, we decided to create the Broadcaster’s version – and organized them by Show Number.
Simply because it is easier to find them by number – assuming you know which number you want of course. Hence the SwingThing Library for Broadcasters.
However, if you’re looking for the best search experience, we include our free searchNplay App (for Mac and PC) with every library we ship.
Nope – although if you have the room ‘we recommend it.
That way you can put the USB Flash Drive that we shipped it to you on in a safe place for safe keeping.
We include a tutorial video that shows both install methods.
One important difference is that if you don’t want the library taking up 64GB of your hard drive space, you will have to insert the USB Flash Drive whenever you want access to the shows (using iTunes). But if you actually copied the library into iTunes, the USB Flash drive does not need to be plugged into your computer to to access the library in iTunes.
The shows are in mp3 format, at 128 kbps bit rate and at a 44,000 kHz sample rate.
However, as many (in fact most) are older songs – recorded before the advent of “HiFi” (stereo) recordings, even though the shows are using modern standards, there’s just not much we could do to improve on the original recording quality. A lot of this stuff originally came from the old “78 rpm” format.
The “Now Playing” (stream) here on the Swing-Thing.com website is served up at a lower bit rate than what’s provided in the SwingThing Libraries’ for iTunes & Broadcasters.
We operate on a tight budget here, and cannot afford to host the shows with some of the better streaming services. Companies like Google would charge hundred’s of dollars a month to store and stream a library of this size – and we simply cannot afford to do that. Which sometimes means the shows can drop off from time to time. The shows themselves don’t contribute to this problem – so if you pick up a copy for yourself, this will not be an issue.
This relates to the last question (above), and is due to the fact that I host these shows on my personal computer at home. And sometimes my computer will be down for maintenance. So, when this happens, just give us some time to finish up with whatever we’re doing – because once we’re done with our maintenance chores, everything will return back to normal, and the shows will be available once again to listen to from the searchNplay App.
Of course, you can always pick up a copy of the library for yourself, and then the library will be yours, where an internet connection (and dependency on our server) will no longer be an issue.
Most of the time this is not an issue. But it will depend on the player used by your web browser.
Some browsers, and also some mobile devices just take longer to pre-buffer before playing ‘than others do. You are more likely to experience these slow-starting situations when listening to the live stream on a mobile device.
Although I cannot list them all here – as they will come and go from time to time.
My recommendation (besides listening here) is to catch us on ShoutCast.com
You can find us there by search their site for “Fred Hall”.
Additionally.. if you happen to have a favorite audio player on your computer, (on Shoutcast) you can select your favorite music player App – whatever you’ve got installed on your machine – by clicking here..
I won’t live forever (I’m already over 60), and when I’m gone this site will quickly whither and die a quiet death.
My goal has always been to preserve my father’s legacy – and hopefully by getting it out there to as many people and broadcasters as I can, SwingThing will continue to have a life of it’s own forever.
I encourage it.
That’s why we’re practically giving it away here.
